The Owl Bureau bookstore in LA showcases generative imagery and cactus-inspired So-Cal design, reflecting LA's vibrant essence.
In this project, we were tasked with designing and creating the central area of the Owl Bureau bookstore located in downtown Highland Park, Los Angeles. Our solution was to divide the space with a large, curved arch wall book display featuring a circular double door as the centerpiece.
We etched a projected line drawing of an owl onto the wall, allowing it to extend into the door, thus connecting the two elements and suggesting the image of expansive owl wings sweeping across the wall’s curve. The door itself was crafted by layering various 3D models of desert flora and incorporating generative algorithms inspired by the growth patterns of cacti, paying homage to Southern California.
Our aim was for the doors to metaphorically reflect Los Angeles—a vibrant amalgamation of dense and complex geometries with hidden treasures waiting to be discovered.
