For this project, we designed a custom wood artwork wall for Ripple Effect Studios / EA Games at their Marina Del Rey campus.
While we typically use vector-based methods and high-resolution surfacing techniques in most of our work, we took a different approach for this piece, drawing inspiration from video games where the final visuals are rendered as pixels on a screen..
This inspired us to explore voxels, or volumetric pixels, to break down the smooth, rippled water surfaces we had designed. By "digitizing" the surface using a voxel technique, we created a lower-resolution, blocky version of the original design, which we then cut into plywood ribs and laminated together. .
The result is a piece with a pixel art aesthetic, reminiscent of early 8-bit video games.
